About the Ward

The City of Chicago officially recognizes 77 divisions of community areas. It's important to note that community areas differ from neighborhoods, as they often encompass multiple neighborhoods within their boundaries. While many community areas contain several neighborhoods, they might share the same name or parts of the names of some of those neighborhoods.
Over time, both neighborhood names and identities have transformed due to real estate development and demographic changes. Notably, Chicago's 16th Ward is home to five of these historic and diverse community areas: Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, New City, and West Englewood.
